Religion at Bromley Reform Synagogue

Rituals and Services

Services are held on Shabbat and for all festivals.  Most are led by our minister, Rabbi Tony Hammond, using the standard Reform liturgy.  However, there are occasional "experimental" services, mainly on Friday nights, when the format differs, and there is a great deal of opportunity for participation by lay members, many of whom also lead services when the Rabbi is absent.

Festival evening services often begin early (most commonly 6.30) in order to enable whole families to participate, and also because they often involve the sharing of food afterwards, something for which we always make time, and the morning services are generally at 10.30 am.  Services for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur are held at an external venue as the Sanctuary* is not large enough to accommodate the large congregations that they attract, but all other services are held in-house.  High holyday tickets for visitors are available from the office, and special schemes are in place for students and members of other Reform congregations.  

Services and other celebrations are held for all the festivals, sometimes involving gatherings at people's homes (particularly for Rosh Hashanah, Sukkot and Chanukah), and there are usually special activities at the Cheder, to some of which the pupils' families or the whole community are also invited.  The communal Seder at Pesach is very popular and early booking (from February onwards) is advised, via the office.

*Our Sanctuary was recently refurbished in light wood and glass, enabling it to reflect the name of the community, Beit Or, House of Light, and with the addition of more comfortable seating. 

Life cycle events, such as birth, B'nei Mitzvah, marriage, conversion and death, are marked, and the services and rituals that we use are regularly reviewed in order to ensure that they are in keeping with the ethos and practices of Reform Judaism.
