The darker side of Purim
Posted on 03-03-2010 Email To Friend      Print Version

Two days after the Shul's revels, Rabbi Tony Hammond addressed a meeting of the local branch of the Council of Christians and Jews, hosted by Bromley, at which he outlined the story of Purim and dug rather deeper into it, to reveal its disturbing side.

Perhaps human beings need to express their aggression and desire vengeance, and acting out a story, concealed by fancy dress, is a safe outlet. The As ever, humorous but profound and keeping in tension the dark and light sides of human behaviour, the Rabbi gently teased out the issues, comparing Purim with other Jewish festivals and Jewish festivals with those of other religions.

Over tea and Hamantaschen afterwards, the guests enjoyed a preview of the photos of the weekend's celebrations and a chance to ask questions of "the locals".
