The Chanukah Oneg Shabbat wasa very moving event. Billed as a talk about the visit of a party from Bromley Shul to Prague earlier in the year, it turned out to be very much more than just a talk, linking 21st century Bromley and the Holocaust directly through a single family. George Stein set the scene by describing the long history of Jews in Prague and how he and his family fitted in. Then Suzanna, his wife, also of Czech origin, showed slides of paintings by her uncle, a talented artist, who had perished in Terezin - or as somebody listening pointed out, "He didn't perish; he was murdered." During his time helping in the "hospital wing" he made hundreds of sketches, each giving the date and the subject's name, which miraculously survived and now form part of an exhibition. The Bromley group had been profoundly moved to happen upon this exhibition during the trip, as those at the Oneg could well understand. George and Suzanna also supplied some welcome seasonal refreshments. The next Oneg is on 8 January. Service starts 6.30pm and we are invited to bring vegetarian food and a Jewish joke. | |
